Maja Makal of the Queens College women's tennis team was named to the 2020 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II Women All-Americans team.

Makal is one of 23 nationally to be recognized in singles and the only player out of the Northeast region to make the singles list.

The All-American honor adds to a historic season for the freshman sensation from Poland. She was 9-1 in singles competition and 8-0 in doubles before the season was shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"When I recruited Maja Makal I knew I had a special player,” said coach Alan Nagel. “On the court, she never fails to fight tenaciously for every point. She never gives up whether the score is in her favor or, rarely, against her."

Makal started her rookie year winning the ITA East Region Singles Championship. She would conclude the fall season helping the Knights reclaim the East Coast Conference Championship along with winning ECC Rookie of the year honors and a First Team Selection.

In the ITA rankings, last released on April 15, she is ranked second in East region in singles, and first in East region in doubles.

"As a player, she has no weaknesses in her game,” Nagel said.”Both her backhand and forehand are outstanding."

The 24th-ranked Knights finished the season 10-1 overall, including winning their eighth East Coast Conference Championship, a conference record.
