Company moving rail repair facility out of Glendale

New York and Atlantic Railways (NYA) is moving its train repair facility out of Glendale and into East New York by the end of June, providing noise relief to nearby residents.

“NYA’s plan to transfer its repair operations is good news for Glendale residents who have long been plagued by noise caused by these rail car repairs,” said Congresswoman Grace Meng, who worked with the company on the move.

Currently, NYA operates its train repair facility out of Fresh Pond Yards along Otto Road. The new location will be in an area that abuts the L train, NYA’s East New York Tunnel, and an existing NYA rail yard.

“Moving the railcar repair facility to Brooklyn is a huge win to this community, and lifts a burden off of homeowners perpetually dealing with noise and air pollution in our community,” said Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley.

Assemblyman Mike Miller, a resident of Glendale himself, said he knows the impact NYA and the rail yard has on residents.

“The longstanding issues that repairs posed were a nuisance to residents who live in that area,” Miller said. “Quality of life is the utmost importance, and this move will slightly improve those conditions.”

But Civics United for Railroad Environmental Solutions (CURES) believes the move won’t have a large impact on Glendale, and is potentially shifting the burden to East New York residents.

“In terms of community impacts, repairs are among the least of the community burdens NYA is causing,” said CURES chair Mary Parisen.

Citing a 2016 study from City College of New York, Parisen said noise levels over 100 decibels were measured inside homes during NYA’s nighttime operations.

“Lack of trained workers and supervision and inadequate time to carry out operations using good practices causes this excessive noise and vibration from banging and crashing cars,” she added. “When is NYA going to fix this by changing the way it operates?”
