With the open competitive exam registration beginning on April 5, the FDNY is introducing a new $10 million advertising campaign that includes banners at every firehouse and an outreach effort.
“With these recruitment banners visible outside all of our 217 firehouses, New Yorkers will see the tremendous opportunity and great responsibility that comes with a career as a New York City Firefighter,” said Commissioner Daniel Nigro while announcing the campaign in Brooklyn on Monday.
Firefighters featured in the campaign share why they love being part of the FDNY.
“Working in a great career like this gives you a sense of purpose,” said Danny Chan from Ladder 109 in Bay Ridge. “This is the best job in the world, but it comes with great responsibility and I always keep that in mind.”
They FDNY is also actively working to recruit women and minorities, two groups underrepresented in the department.
“I’m reaching out to all the women who didn’t think this could be a possibility for them,” said women's outreach coordinator Jackie-Michelle Martinez. “We are out there and we exist. I hope everyone can look at me and envision yourself doing the same thing.”
The exam consists of a written portion and physical test. For more information on the test or how to prepare, visit www.joinfdny.com.
