Edison Pena ran six miles a day while trapped in a coal mine for 69 days. Now that he’s out, Pena will take the next logical step – racing in the New York City Marathon.

Pena, one of the 33 Chilean miners that spent over two months trapped in a mine, accepted an invitation to participate in Sunday’s marathon, said New York Road Runners Club President Mary Wittenberg Monday.

Pena, who was invited to participate in a symbolic capacity, perhaps holding the finishing tape or riding in the lead car, insisted he was up for the run.

This is not Pena’s first race since escaping the mine. Pena, who became known as “The Runner” because of his daily workouts, ran a 10.5 mile leg of a triathlon in Chile on October 24.
